Patrick Vega obtained the highest academic degree at the U. de Concepción in 2018 under the direction of Manuel Solano and Rodolfo Araya.
Since 2023, Patrick Vega Román has worked as an academic in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMCC) of the Faculty of Science at the University of Santiago de Chile (USACH).
Previously, at the end of 2018, he successfully defended at the U. de Concepción his thesis 'Adaptive and High Order Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin Methods in Fluid Mechanics' to obtain the degree of Doctor in Applied Sciences with mention in Mathematical Engineering, under the direction of Drs. Rodolfo Araya Durán and Manuel Solano Palma from the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering, CI²Ma, which Patrick recently joined as a researcher.
In this regard, Dr. Rodolfo Araya Durán, director of CI²Ma, noted that “it is very gratifying to see the academic growth of our former students. Undoubtedly, the incorporation of Patrick to our research staff will help us to bring new scientific ideas, as well as new academic collaborations with other institutions".
Dr. Vega is a specialist in Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations and Finite Element Methods in Engineering Sciences and recently participated in the 36th version of the Southern Zone Mathematics Conference that took place at the U. Católica de Temuco, giving the talk 'Source regularization through projection in dual norms for nonconforming finite element discretizations' and, in the coming weeks, he will participate in a scientific event in Bilbao, Spain (Minimum Residual & Least-Squares Finite Element Methods, MinRes&LS-FEM 2024), which brings together leading international researchers in the area of residual minimization methods, and will make a short stay in Milan, Italy (MOX Research Group for Advanced Numerical Methods for Scientific Computing del Politecnico di Milano), a trip financed with USACH internal funds from the DICYT Contest Support Attendance to National and International Scientific Events for Research Activities. “We are initiating a collaboration with them on advanced non-conformal methods for poromechanics and related problems”, the academic explains.
For November, Dr. Vega plans to participate in Australia, at Monash University, in a conference (Computational Techniques and Applications Conference, CTAC 2024) that is being organized by Dr. Ricardo Ruiz-Baier, also a doctoral student at UdeC. “He invited us from WONAPDE 2024 and I have funding through my Fondecyt project to make that trip”.
In his department, Patrick will integrate the cloisters of the graduate programs and with the CI²Ma he has maintained since his doctorate a collaboration with his thesis directors, in addition to Franz Chouly, also a collaborator of Araya who made a visit to the UdeC.
In addition, together with Nicolás Barnafi (PUC), Yissedt Lara (UCM) and Manuel Solano (UdeC), Patrick Vega is a member of the organizing committee of the Tenth Meeting on Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (Talca Numérica I), which will be held on a date to be announced in the first semester of 2025.
