Numerical simulation of filtration of a suspension through a radial filter with given flow rate
Abstract:
The process of filtration of a suspension through a cylindrical filter with a constant flow rate is considered. The suspension is fed through the outer surface of the filter, where a layer of suspended solid particles retained by the filter, called a cake layer, is formed. Given the symmetry, the suspension flow is assumed to be one-dimensional and radial. Suspension filtration equations are derived for the specified conditions. A filtration problem for this equation is posed under the condition of constant suspension flow rate. The problem is solved numerically, and the pressure field distribution for the liquid and solid phases, as well as the cake layer permeability, are determined. The dynamics of cake layer thickness change are also determined. The influence of the parameters relating the concentration of solid particles and permeability to pressure in the solid phase on the filtration characteristics is assessed. These characteristics are the compressive pressure distribution, the cake layer thickness, the solid volume fraction profile, and the relative permeability within the cake layer.
