The 30th version of the Jornada de Matemática de la Zona Sur was held at the UCSC.
At the San Andrés campus of the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC), the XXX Jornada de Matemática de la Zona Sur (XXX JMZS) was held between Wednesday the 26th and Friday the 28th of April, in which members of the Center for Research in Mathematical Engineering, CI²MA, played relevant roles. Associate external researchers, Luis Gatica and Jessika Camaño, who are also faculty members at the Departamento de Matemática y Física Aplicadas at Facultad de Ingeniería from UCSC, participated in XXX JMZS scientific and organizing committees, respectively.
Meanwhile, a large group of CI²MA researchers and students took part in the Numerical Analysis thematic session. This was the case of the director of the Center, Gabriel Gatica, who presented the talk A mixed virtual element method for the Brinkman problem; this in addition to Felipe Lepe (Acoustic interaction between dissipative fluids), Paulo Zúñiga (A high order mixed-FEM for problems on curved domains by extensions from subdomains), Manuel Solano (A high order HDG method for stokes flow in curved domains), Iván Velásquez (Finite element approximation for the vibration problem of Reissner–Mindlin plates), Cinthya Rivas (A perfectly matched layer for finite-element calculations of diffraction by metallic surface-relief gratings), Ricardo Oyarzúa (Error analysis of an mixed method for the Navier-Stokes problem with mixed boundary conditions), Leonardo Figueroa (Approximation theory and spectral methods with Sobolev orthogonal polynomials), Jessika Camaño (Graphs, spanning trees and divergence-free finite elements in domains of general topology), Mauricio Sepúlveda (Energy decay to Timoshenko system with indefinite damping), and Luis Gatica (A priori and a posteriori error analyses of a flux-based mixed-FEM for convection-diffusion-reaction problems). Besides, in this session, Pablo Venegas, researcher from the Universidad del Bío-Bío, presented his talk Mathematical analysis and numerical methods for dynamic Preisach hysteresis model.
Furthermore, CI²MA researcher Rodolfo Araya taught one of the short courses given at the meeting, with the name Introduction to the Finite Element Method. In turn, CI²MA close collaborator, Norbert Heuer, academician from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, led one of the plenary lectures of the metting: DPG. A method to solve EDPs in a controlled manner. The other plenary sessions were given by Andrés Navas from USACH (inaugural conference), Jesús Muciño (UNAM), Fabián Flores (UdeC) and Monica Musso (PUC).
The Jornada de Matemática de la Zona Sur is a national meeting, held since 1986 and organized sequentially by each of the ten traditional universities from the south of the country, which belong to the Consejo de Rectores de las Universidades Chilenas (CRUCh). The 30th version was sponsored by the Sociedad de Matemática de Chile (Somachi) and by the participating higher education institutions.
